Segomo Hard Suit

The hard suit entered UK military service after many years of development. BAe incorporated many technical developments in to the concept before finally settling on the Segomo.

The Powered Armour has been a science fiction staple for years, from Heinlein's Starship troopers to Robocop. Many armours have been tried but they are usually too heavy to provide any worth while protection and powered armours were just too ungainly. The introduction of advanced Nano-carbon and diamond whisker armours as well as graphene artificial muscles that were all being utilised on the Manta provided the BAe team with everything that they needed.

Other than just kinetic protection from bullets and fragmentation, the Segomo is designed to protect the British soldier from environmental hazards such as hot and cold climates, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons, as well as space and aquatic operations.

Layers

The Segomo is made up from Five separate layers.

Skin Suit

The skin suit is a highly advanced protective and sensor layer. It is a skin tight fitted suit that covers the soldier from toe to neck. It is a multi-weave material that incorporates nano-carbon, diamond whisker, gold nano-wire, environmental weave, and a central nervous system artificial intelligence. The skin suit has since become the mainstay of all military uniform.

"Getting in to a skin suit is always fun - the only way to get in is through the neck! it just stretches and then shrinks to fit."

Muscle Suit

The second layer provides an increase in strength and speed for the modern British Soldier. Miniaturised graphene artificial muscles and carbon nanotubes give the increased strength needed to support the Armour layer. When not in use and being worn the muscle suit looks like a bag of saggy fat, but, once the soldier climbs in through the neck the skin suits CNS instructs the Muscle Suit to contract. Thick, cord-like muscles enhance the soldiers physic enabling high-speeds, increased reactions, and augmented strength.

"I wouldn't mind but the M-suit relies on the enhanced bone structure for support. I pity the person that dons one without a dense titanium enhanced bone structure."

Armour Layer

The all important protective layer provides kinetic and energetic defence. It is a multiple layer containing soft and hard armours. Diamond whisker coatings and ring carbon provide the outer defence.

"Yeah the armour might be able to stop most things. Doesn't mean that you ain't going to get hurt being thrown across the place after the impact though!"

Utility Layer

Many armours forget that a soldier has to carry a vast amount of kit around when on operations. From food and water to ammunition. The Segomo utilises an adaptable multi-pouch fixing system that allows the user to attach pouches where they are convenient for the mission. The load carrying equipment has advanced stealth capabilities that link in to the hard suits CNS and sensors.

"The load carrying equipment is a fantastic bit of kit. And with the m-Suit makes it really easy to get about."

Camouflage Layer

This is the last layer of the hard suit. It consists of a Nano coating of adaptive camouflage that is capable of changing colour, tone, and reflection to suit the environment. In it's default mode the Segomo is black. But when activated the adaptive camouflage uses the sensors to detect the environment and changes colour to provide the best means of disruption.

The adaptive camo is fantastic! A Segomo standing still in a corner is virtually impossible to see.

Armaments

The Segomo Hard-suit is capable of using all handheld weaponry. The Hard-suit can also be fitted with a variety of additional weapons and equipment to suit hard-points. There are hard-points on both shoulders and both forearms.

Hard Points

The Segomo's hard points can accept a multitude of equipment utilising an adaptable casemate system. Common equipment includes;

  • Forearm weapons and missile mounts
  • Shoulder mini missile system
  • Shoulder weapons mount
  • Shoulder self-defence missile system
  • Shoulder anti-missile laser turret
  • Shoulder ECM system
  • Enhanced communications system
  • Ballistic and laser collapsibleshield
  • Various enhanced sensor and detection systems such as motion sensors and Digital Terrain Mapping.
  • Shoulder mounted swim assist system
  • Shoulder mounted micro-drone launcher

Energetics

A benefit of the carbon nanotubes lacing the armour is that when they are flexed and bent they generate a pulse of energy. This has solved the problem of all previous exo-suits by having a small energy reserve that is charged simply by the soldier moving around. This energetic charging is complemented by the built-in opal pack wafers that provide a regular power supply for up to 48 hours with out charge. Wireless charging and energy harvesting from ambient EM signals also compliment the Segomo's energetic requirements. Additional equipment can have their own power supply that is complimented by the hard-suits systems.

Defensive Capabilities

The main aims of the Segomo Hard-Suit is the protection of the British Soldier. It is difficult to test the armour in its suit format due to the flexing of joints, etc. In tests the Segomo has remained intact with multiple direct hits from all common small arms fire and with single hits from large kinetic rounds such as the .50 BMG. Anti-personnel mines have also been tested with the Hard-Suit remaining fully operational with no full penetration of the armour. Tests against close proximity to fragmentation grenades have also proven to protect the soldier.

Although the Segomo can withstand many large bore tank fired rounds there is usually some damage. The soldier within the Hard-Suit is often injured due to massive kinetic energy transfer to the suits interior. Although this may be the case it would be an unlucky strike against a fast moving target. Attached equipment is also usually severely damaged.

Energetics

  • Primary
        • Opal Pack wafers lining most of the armour and laced through the M-Suit
  • Recharging
        • Wireless and energy harvesting.Ambient energetic re-charging. Whilst in its storage rack the Segomo is continuously charged and ready for use.
        • Active Nanotube rechargeing. When moving around the soldier actively recharges the opal packs.

Defensive

  • Armour
        • Carbon nanotube/polymer hard plate armour.
        • RingCarbon nanotube soft shell inner armour and flexible joint protection.
        • Diamond Whisker coated visor and sensor windows.
  • Electronics
        • EMP hardened systems to 2020 military standard. The entire armour can act like a faraday cage with grounding to Earth. A cable ground can be utilised by vehicle crews.

Informatics

  • Overlay
        • Visor Heads Up Display. The soldiers ICE systems are supplemented by a visor heads up overlay. A variety of mission specific information can be displayed;
          • Primary mission
          • Navigation
          • IFF identification
          • Secondary Image overlay windows
          • Jay personal drone data
