Wasps are the latest generation of space fighters. Using the latest EM and EG drive technology the Wasp is one of the most maneoverable combat platforms developed by 2180.
Commonly deployed in flights of three with one human pilot and two AI piloted craft. This enabled the RSF to find a workaround of the commonwealth's Military AI restrictions.
There is no difference in layout from AI and piloted controlled Wasps. The AI have a full cockpit and life support fitted and can be piloted if required. The pilot sits in a gel filled VR cockpit suite that is placed at the center of the craft. This enables their ICE wetware to work in 'bullet' time where time is slowed to such an extreme that bullets can be dodged.
Yeah bullet time is great when you are in a fight. But stay in it for too long and you will have a headache for a week!
The gel cockpit has EG Inertial compensation up to 50g effects. The system has been known to protect a pilot at twice that with only minor injuries sustained. The AI's systems were damaged due to nano gravitational effects on its solid state systems.
Access is from the crafts stern. The ball cockpit then seals as the pilot enters their VR state. there is no manual control over the Wasp.
In an emergency the entire cockpit ball can be ejected. An advantage of the AI controlled Wasps is that their own cockpit can be ejected and used to collect the piloted one.
In an extreme the pilot can be jettisoned from the cockpit.
If an enemy is quite happy to shoot at the ejected cockpit they will think nothing of using you as target practice!
The entire craft is built around the central cockpit. pylons radiate out from the cockpit and attach to the outer ring airfoil drive section. Between each of the six pylons are the weapons, sensors, and myriad of other systems starcraft love to carry.
Each pylon contains a power core, CNS systems, life support, shield generation, nano repair systems, and sensors. individual pylons contain less essential systems such as; waste processing and communications.
The later block 3 upgrade added crossover to the craft enabling FTL strike capability.
the inner surface of the ring airfoil and the pylons are all fitted with casemate adapters. This has enabled the wasp to be able to carry and launch almost all RSF ordinance. This enables Wasps to be outfitted for a variety of roles. The standard configuration has Wasps deployed in a defensive loadout against enemy ships and fighters.
