The Challenger 2 had been in British Service since 1998 and was long due an upgrade. Due to the UK's isolation MBT and other armoured vehicles were not really required. It was only when Gibraltar was invaded in 2029 that the Army started to push for a new, replacement for the Challenger. BAe Land and Armaments built the new Spectre using the latest technology available.
The large hull is a flattened oval incorporating and armoured version of the EGDrive system. A scalloped turret is mounted to the rear of the hull with paired ammunition drums in the main hull to the rear. The two crew sit in front of the turret in an armoured 'bath tub' providing increased survivability. to the front lies the main sensor system and fusion power core.
The turret is a scalloped design that houses the Spectres principle weapons system, Twin independently targeted BAe-CG160 coil guns. These guns were developed to accommodate a variety of powered and unpowered rounds. The CG160 uses a series of electro-magnetic rings along the length of the barrel to accelerate the rounds to enormous speeds. Powered rounds are given an initial burst before starting their own built in drives.
The rear of the turret flares out in to its characteristic scallop shell providing an additional shield over the paired ammunition drums.
Two rotating ammunition drums are mounted in the rear of the Spectre behind to heavily armoured doors. Each contains a combat mix of 24 powered and 16 unpowered rounds. The turret and drums are auto loading and capable of firing once every 4 seconds.
The two crew sit in an armoured tub in front of the turret in fully immersive VR Holographic control suites using their built-in ICE wetwear.
The environment is air conditioned and filter for protection from gas and NBC threats. The system can be sealed for low orbital drops and underwater operation. The sealed system provides for 48 hours supply.
As has been standard in British armoured vehicles for years, a boiling vessel (BV) is fitted enabling the crew to brew a tea and other hot beverages, and to heat boil-in-the-bag meals from a standard ration pack.
